KMS Student Activities

KULA WAENA CLUB CATALOG

School Year 2024-2025

 

The KSK Student Activities Program seeks to meet the educational, emotional, and spiritual needs of student learners by following KS Educational Policy and Procedures and the CADA/CASL (California Association of Directors of Activities & California Association of Student Learners). 

 

The objectives of the KS Student Activities Program are to provide haumāna the opportunities to:

  • Develop leadership potential through planning, implementing, evaluating, and participating in events, activities, service projects, retreats, conferences, school exchanges, etc.;

  • Develop personal interests and talents through participation in clubs and student government;

  • Develop personal and social relationship skills through social activities such as dances, picnics, banquets, Founder’s Day ceremonies, etc.;

  • Develop as contributing and participating members of society through participation in elections, legislative experiences, committees, visitations, conferences and other events. 

 

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF CLUBS AT KULA WAENA?

Clubs allow haumāna opportunities to…

  • Explore and develop personal interests, passions, and talents

  • Connect with members of our kaiāulu: Meet new people, build pilina and relationships with others that share similar interests

  • Have fun in a safe environment

 

At Kula Waena, all haumāna join a club and all kumu advise or co-advise a club. Clubs will meet at designated Club meeting school days throughout the school year, allowing all haumāna an opportunity to have a club experience.

ASKMS STUDENT LEADERSHIP

For elected student leaders. Student leaders work to improve school spirit, school culture, present solutions, and represent the voice of the students. 

Our three leadership councils are the:

5D DIAMOND PAINTING CLUB

Bedazzling-5d painting is a relatively new craft activity that is fun and relaxing. Crafters get immersed in "sticking" shimmering rhinestones, called “diamonds” or drills to a canvas to create a beautiful sparkling picture. This is a simple, easy hobby that is perfect for relaxing and distressing. 

AWESOME CLUB

Why do it if Itʻs not awesome? We don't. We do awesome things. Wanna learn How to spin on the 1s and 2s?  Wanna create your own camouflage? Wanna jam and play Music? Wanna do something awesome outside?  Wanna smoke meat?  Have an awesome idea? Join the Awesome Club and Be Awesome! 

BIBLE CLUB

Study the Bible scriptures to understand what God is saying to us.

CARD MASTERS CLUB

Do you like to play Trumps, UNO, or Speed? If so, this is the club for you. Come and join us for a relaxing time of playing cards and hanging out. 

CLASSIC MOMENTS IN SPORTS CLUB

Welcome to the "Classic Moments in Sports Club," where each session brings you the most iconic and unforgettable moments that have shaped the world of sports. From legendary NBA buzzer-beaters and NFL game-winning plays to historic college upsets and triumphs in various sports, we'll dive into the events that defined generations and eras. Whether you're a die-hard sports fan or just curious about the magic behind these incredible moments, this club offers a front-row seat to relive the drama, passion, and legacy of the greatest athletes and teams in history.

COLLEGE PLANNING CLUB

Are you curious about what it takes to get into college? Do you want to start preparing early for your future? Join the College Planning Club! This club is perfect for middle school students who are excited about exploring their college options and planning ahead.

CROCHET CLUB

The KMS crochet club is a fun and creative space where students can learn and practice the art of crochet. Beginners start with learning basic stitches like chain, single crochet, and double crochet, then can move on to crocheting amigurumi stuffed animals or characters. Crocheting is a relaxing activity, and the club provides a great opportunity for students to express their creativity through their projects, experimenting with different colors and patterns.

ESPORTS CLUB

Our club will explore unique video games from vintage arcade games to modern day hits. Titles range from Rocket League, Roblox, to Super Smash Bros. This club is open to all those that weren't able to or are currently NOT in our ESports elective classes. You will have many opportunities to grow as a gamer or just have fun with your friends during our club time. 

HANA KEAKA (DRAMA/THEATER)

If you are interested in learning about awesome people and times in History while enjoying quality snacks then this is the club for you. We will watch "based on a true story film" like Hidden Figures, Apollo 13, Miracle, 42, and others. Snacks will be tailored to the theme of the movie or based on an activity. 

HOGWARTS CLUB

Interested in shopping at Diagon Alley, visiting Hogsmeade, and strolling the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry? Join us for adventures in the Wonderful Wizarding World of Harry, Hermione, Ron, Neville, Luna, and all the other members of the Order of the Phoenix. Watch out for that treacherous whomping willow!

HOLIDAY CLUB

Do you enjoy celebrating holidays? If so, this is the club for you! Each club we will do a variety of activities to celebrate the nearest holiday. Activities can include: holiday crafts, foods, movies, games, and more. Join us for good fun and fellowship in the Holiday Club! 

HOLOHOLO CLUB

Looking for young anglers or nature enthusiasts interested in fishing who also share an affinity for exploring nature - then this club could be perfect. If fishing has always been part of your passion then look no further - come holoholo! Join us as we embark on excursions, learn various techniques and enjoy exploring locations! At Holoholo Club, our club's aim is simple: having fun while making friends and learning to holoholo!

HUI KAMAʻILIO (TALK STORY CLUB)

Do you like to talk? Are you talkative? Or do you want to become more open to talking to other people, besides just your close circle of friends & family? If so, then the Hui Kamaʻilio (Da Talk Story Club) is for you! When we hui, we will kamaʻilio about various topics while building pilina (relationships) and exploring who we are as ʻōiwi Hawaiʻi (Native Hawaiians). E kama'ilio kākou! Let's talk story :)

HULA CLUB (KAIKAMAHINE)

The Hula Club for Girls is open to haumāna of all levels. It is an opportunity to connect more deeply with this Hawaiian art form. Learn about hula protocol and the moʻolelo behind each hula. Come join us and enjoy dancing hula kahiko and hula ʻauana.

(BOYS SINGING AND HULA CLUB)

Boys will learn how to dance a hula. Then they will learn how to play and sing their hula!

K-CLUB

Annyeonghaseyo! Join this club to explore and learn more about Korea through its language, food, and culture. During our club meetings, we will enjoy Korean culture and food, practice simple Korean words and phrases, watch k-drama, and listen to k-pop.

KAʻIANA CHRONICLES CLUB

The Kaʻiana Chronicles club is a dynamic, creative space where students come together to perform a hip hop musical inspired by the style of Hamilton. Our production tells the riveting story of Kaʻiana, a chief who played a pivotal role in the rise and fall of Kamehameha’s rule during the unification of Hawai'i. Through music, dance, and drama, we explore Kaʻiana’s journey of power, betrayal, and his fateful end at the Battle of Nuʻuanu. Club members will learn about the historical events surrounding Kaʻiana’s life while developing skills in performance, choreography, and songwriting. This is a chance for students to engage with Hawaiian history in a fresh, modern way, bringing to life the complexities of loyalty, leadership, and conflict through the expressive energy of hip hop. Whether you’re a singer, dancer, actor, or just passionate about storytelling, The Kaʻiana Chronicles is the perfect place to share your talent and dive deep into a powerful chapter of Hawaiian history. Join us and be a part of a groundbreaking musical journey that connects the past with the present!

KALĀKAUAʻS GLOBAL ADVENTURES CLUB

👑🌏 Join us on a unique journey around the world as we follow the footsteps of King Kalākaua on his historic world tour! In Kalākaua’s Global Adventures Club, we will explore the cultures, traditions, and histories of the countries King Kalākaua visited during his travels. Each month, we’ll dive into a different country by cooking and tasting authentic foods, crafting traditional art, and watching fun documentaries that bring these cultures to life. Discover the global connections of Hawaiʻi’s past, learn about the significance of King Kalākaua’s tour, and celebrate the diversity of cultures he encountered. 👑🌏

KIA ORA! MAORI CLUB

Kia ora tātou kātoa! Are you part Māori, or are you interested in learning Te Reo Māori & ona tikanga (Māori language & culture? If so consider this club! We will learn how to introduce ourselves in Māori while also strengthening our hoʻolauna in Hawaiian. We will also learn about Māori culture including song, dance and art. We may even get the privilege to host Māori visitors some day this year! For students who are ʻeleu, we may meet outside of club hours. NAU MAI, HAERE MAI!!!

KOALA TEA CLUB

Explore the various different cultures through a common shared beverage - tea. Whether it is the handpicked leaves from China, matcha and green tea from Japan, yerba mate from South America, corn tea from Korea, or even our own māmaki here in Hawai'i. Learn about each different place with nothing but their style of tea and tea making.

KULA MANU CLUB

Welcome to the Kula Manu Club! We’re a fun and creative club all about Hawaiian featherwork, a special kind of art that uses colorful feathers to make beautiful designs to honor our ʻaliʻi. Our club is connected with the Kula Manu Club at the high school, which started last year.

 

Recently, the high school club went on an awesome trip to Boston, MA. They visited cool places like the Berkshire and Peabody Museums, where they saw amazing feather capes called ʻahuʻula worn by Hawaiian chiefs. They also gave presentations and workshops to teach the community about the Hawaiian art of featherwork. 

 

In our club, you'll learn about this amazing tradition and help the high school students recreate an ʻahuʻula! This is a club you can continue to be in when you get to high school! Be a part of recreating Hawaiian treasures!

LAUGH OUT LOUD (LOL) CLUB

Do you like to laugh or need a laugh? Then come join our club where we will LOL together! In our club, we’ll watch hilarious TV shows and laugh-out-loud movies like Barbie, Minions, and Shrek. Even explore comedy in unexpected places. But that’s not all – we’ll also dive into the world of comedic writing, exploring different types of comedy and what makes people laugh. Whether you’re a fan of witty one-liners, slapstick humor, or clever satire, there’s something for everyone. Join us for a fun-filled journey through the world of comedy, where laughter is always the best medicine!

LET’S MAKE-UP! CLUB

In this club we will learn and practice different make-up techniques from face, to eyes, to cheeks, and lips. We will also learn about the importance of skin care and why itʻs important to prep and clean the skin. We will watch tutorials from the latest make-up guru influencers and discuss larger topics around being confident in your own skin! We will put on make-up to feel pretty for no one but ourselves! 💄

LIKE CHALLENGE? CLUB

The "Like Challenge?" Club will embrace the opportunity to battle your peers in various STEM activities, along with individual playoffs of chess, cards, and online approved games. 

LOST IN MY BOOK CLUB

If you love to read or just hanging out with friends this is the club for you! Bring your favorite book and other ideas to make this time together amazing.

MATH SUPPORT CLUB

Do you need extra help on some mathematical problems?  Come and get the support you need here at the math support club.  We will work on improving your math skills during our meeting times.

PEN AND PIXEL CLUB

Pen and Pixel club is a creative space to come together and explore films. Through monthly meetings, participants delve into a variety of movies as we capture our thoughts, feelings, and interpretations.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

Do you enjoy taking photos and learning about various digital media? In the Photography Club you will learn about photography composition techniques, cameras, graphic design, video editing, journalism, and sports media. You will build your confidence and communication skills through various technology tools to help tell the KMS story.

PICKLEBALL CLUB

Like Pickleball? One of the fastest growing sports in America! And, no, it's not tennis or badminton, it's pickleball. Come join us in this fun game that is not just for seniors and retired folks. Come join Pickleball Club! Open to all levels from beginner to expert, even those that have never played before. 

PIDGIN CLUB

Calling all mature student participants: The Pidgin Club is centered on analyzing Native Hawaiian and local literature and linguistics (Hawaiian-Creole English) for deeper meaning. We will be viewing clips and reading excerpts of pidgin then summarizing the content and interpreting its kaona. Students will also be creating satirical content using pidgin to expose an injustice in a creative yet humorous way. 

Pidgin club is open to 8th grade only.

ROTTEN TOMATOES CLUB

Calling all movie lovers! Rotten Tomatoes club views and reviews school-appropriate PG films and creates our own reviews of them to be shared in a round-table discussion setting.

RUNNING CLUB

During our club time, we will run around campus, cross-country style. We may also run laps around the track. Please bring water and running shoes in order to participate. The purpose of this club is to increase physical fitness and cardiovascular health.

 

SONGWRITING CLUB

Come join us as we dive into the world of songwriting! Whether you’re a lyricist, instrumentalist, or just love to sing, this is your chance to learn how to write your own songs and create catchy lyrics and melodies.  You will have the chance to collaborate with other students to craft and refine your songs and even record your songs in a recording studio.  No songwriting experience needed—just bring your enthusiasm and creativity. Let’s make music together!

STEAM CLUB

Are you passionate about Science, Technology, Economics, Art & Math? If you are, then this is the club for you! This club gives students the opportunity to express their creativity in the fields of Science, Technology, Economics, Art and Math. Join this club if you love science, math, art, economics and technology.

TENNIS LOVES & ACES CLUB

Tennis loves and aces club is open to boys and girls of all abilities.  From complete beginners to intermediate and up.  No experience necessary.  Just a willingness to learn how to play this wonderful sport of a lifetime!  We’ll learn all about love (in the tennis sense).   We will review and practice fundamental skills and have fun in the process.  We will have tennis racquets to use and lend to club members.



 

THE CRAFTY CRAFTERS CLUB

From bedazzled tumblers, resin paperweights, vinyl decals and stickers, to fabric charcuterie boards and painted denim...crafting on budget will take you on a journey to create one of a kind items to be used for yourself or as a gift to your loved ones.  Let your creative brain flow and become the crafty crafter on a budget.

 

WASHINGTON D.C./NEW YORK TRAVEL CLUB

 

Want to travel this Spring Break to the East Coast? Join the Washington D.C. & New York Travel club, where we will be participating in a Close Up travel opportunity! Using the United States capital as a living classroom, students get a “close up” view of government and American history as they interact with the people, places, and processes that make this federal city so unique. Additionally, we will explore indigenous histories and native Hawaiian connections in Washington D.C. While in New York City, travel to Times Square, watch a Broadway show, and connect at the United Nations! 

The Washington D.C./New York Travel club is open to 8th grade.



 

WYLDLIFE

Hey! Hey! Hey!  Listen up! Listen up!  Want to have fun? Play goofy games?  Win raffles! Learn about the greatest man ever lived? Sing? Get a bit crazy?  Come and join the Wyldlife Club this year! Under the direction of YoungLife leaders, Brady Giusta and Kalaninui Akau, and KMS kumu, there is never a dull, boring moment. Come join the fun!
