About Kamehameha Scholars

OUR MISSION:
To engage Native Hawaiian youth and their families in the preparation of, admission to, and success in higher education.  Kamehameha Scholars will provide college and career planning resources and guidance to assist scholars in developing a Personal Pathway Plan.

WHAT IS KAMEHAMEHA SCHOLARS?
Kamehameha Scholars is a supplementary enrichment program with a focus on college and career guidance.  The program is designed to encourage and assist students in raising their academic and career aspirations.  Students will discover and assess their skills, interests and values and explore matching career options for their future.  Kamehameha Scholars is part of Kamehameha Schools' effort to extend its educational reach to more students of Hawaiian ancestry.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Kamehameha Scholars supports students in their home community via regularly-scheduled activities during non-school times including weekends, evenings, and intersessions.  These include:

  • Quarterly college and career guidance workshops
  • Parent-scholar group guidance sessions
  • Leadership training
  • Service learning activities
  • Career field trips
  • Hawaiian cultural enrichment activities
  • Character education
  • Project-based learning activities
  • Special events including Kamehameha Scholars' annual Founder's Day and Hōʻike.

With Kamehameha Schools' Philosophy of Education as its foundation, participants will obtain a framework for their future as the program supports the learning process through a diverse and integrated curriculum and a range of services that are enhanced by the use of relevant technologies, real life connections, and authentic experiences.  Through active participation in the program, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop leadership skills to assist them throughout their high school careers and beyond
  • Increase awareness and commitment to lifelong service to their communities
  • Develop knowledge and skills to perpetuate ʻIke Hawaiʻi
  • Gain skills needed for effectively competing in the 21st century
  • Successfully progress through high school and attain their diploma
  • Explore post high school options.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Enrollment is available to students living on Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, and Kauaʻi who are entering the 9th through 12th grades in the Fall and who will not be attending one of Kamehameha Schools' three campuses.  Once enrolled, students may remain in the program through high school graduation.  Due to the sequential and developmental nature of the program, it is highly recommended that students enter Kamehameha Scholars from the 9th grade to provide the fullest educational experience in preparation for their post-secondary aspirations.  Applications are available during the Spring of each year; please visit the Kamehameha Schools' website at www.ksbe.edu for application requirements, forms, and deadlines.

WHAT IS THE KAMEHAMEHA SCHOLARS MERIT SCHOLARSHIP?

Kamehameha Scholars offers students the opportunity to earn a one-time (non-renewable) post-high merit scholarship.  Students earn merit scholarship points for attending workshops and guidance sessions, completing assignments and projects, participating in service learning activities, and for excelling at their individual schools as evidenced by their Grade Point Averages (GPA).   Students must remain in the Kamehameha Scholars program through their high school graduation and enroll in an accredited post-high institution in order to receive the benefits of the merit scholarship.  The merit scholarship will be administered by Kamehameha Schools' Financial Aid and Scholarship Services Department (FASS).

WHAT IS MY ROLE AS A PARENT?

Kamehameha Scholars involves parents, caregivers, siblings, and other members of the student's ʻohana to ensure that we effectively engage the family in raising performance and raising student aspirations for higher education and achievement.  Parents are encouraged to participate in a yearly group guidance session with their child, and will be invited to join their child in at least one service learning activity during the year.  A yearly progress report is sent to each student's parent(s) each quarter to keep them up to date with regard to their child's participation and achievement of specific program goals and objectives.
