As the Hawaiian Culture Based Education Department, our goal is to enrich as many people as we can.  To support that effort, we've compiled a list of resources for anyone wishing to continue their own education.  Please feel free to browse the links below.  We'll add to it whenever we find something new!


General Online Resources

Hawaiian Dictionary     

This site contains three different Hawaiian Dictionaries, as well as two books on Place Names.  Make your selection by toggling the drop down menu.  Search for words or places using the search box on the left.

Hawaiian Language Newspaper Project

This focus of this project was to make Hawaiian Language newspapers available online.  The newspapers found here are generally the same that you can find on, however, this site also lists some additional links that are helpful.


Ka‘iwakīloumoku Virtual Archive

This site, published by Kamehameha Schools' Ka‘iwakīloumoku Hawaiian Cultural Center, houses an exhausting amount of information.  From oral histories to local recipies to videos of panel discussions, this site has it all.  It is well worth the time it takes to browse through the many resources available.

‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i

Part of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, ‘Imiloa explores the night sky, from the Hawaiian point of view.  This website offers a wealth of knowledge about wayfinding & navigation, as well as information about the Hawaiian language, including helpful links to learn more.  The site also offers curriculum for teachers who plan to visit the center, or who simply want to integrate the night sky into their lessons.


Mālama i ka ‘Āina

A contact list for K-12 Science Curricula and Culturally Relevant Professional Development.  This page lists various organizations and who to contact if you want to learn more.


Project Kāhea Loko

Compiled by the Pacific American Foundation in 2003, this curriculum resource offers excellent information about fishponds.

Libraries & Archives

Hawai‘i State Public Library - online catalog


Hawai‘i State Archives Digital Collections

Offers links to Genealogical Indexes, Government Office Holders, Land Index, Mahele Book, Name Index 1790-1950, Passenger Manifests, Tax Ledgers, Vital Statistics Collection, and World War I Service Records.  Some of these collections are not complete, but what little is available online is helpful in determining what else might be available at the Archives building.


Bishop Museum Online Data

This page contains links to several online resources.  The Ethnology Collection is especially interesting for those curious about Hawaiian cultural artifacts.


Bishop Museum Library Catalog and Archives Catalog

The Library houses Books & Periodicals, while the Archives houses Mele (ancient and historical), Manuscripts, Photographs, and other resources.  The actual documents are not accessible online, but this link is useful in determining what is available at these repositories.


University of Hawai‘i Center for Oral History

Offers information about studies that have been done, as well as some interviews online.
